Reform the Toxic Substances Control Act
DSEJ recently became a member of the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families (SCHF) coalition, a national campaign to protect the health of Americans by putting common sense limits on toxic chemicals.
DSEJ became involved with the SCHF coalition because we are very interested in protecting our most vulnerable populations. We want adequate reduction in the disproportionate burden of toxic chemical exposure to people of color, the low-income population, and indigenous communities. Through grass-roots organizing, we are building our coalition in Delaware in support of reforming the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
The TSCA was adopted in 1976 to empower the EPA and help decrease the amount of dangerous chemicals that we are exposed to in our everyday lives. Unfortunately, the Act has not had the impact that was intended. We are still exposed and affected. A new report by the NRDC shows that there are EIGHT cancer-clusters in the state of Delaware. Manufacturing companies do not have to prove that chemicals are safe before they are allowed into our homes and workplaces. Most labels reveal little about the dangers of exposure, and the amount of chemicals used in products have insufficient or no limits. A strong TSCA reform will protect our health and the environment.
Here’s an article about disease-clusters and our coalition, Groups ask federal help on disease-clusters.
